As a San Jose family photographer, I’ve had the joy of hosting three years of beautiful motherhood mini sessions in the studio. These sessions, filled with love, laughter, and sentimental moments, have always been close to my heart. But this year, something special happened: after three years of capturing these precious moments indoors, the mamas spoke, and their votes were heard—this year’s sessions would be held outdoors at sunset. The shift was exciting, and it turned out to be one of the most magical and rewarding experiences I’ve had as a photographer.
Today, I’ll take you behind the scenes of this year’s motherhood mini sessions, highlights the benefits of booking one, and shares why these sessions have become a beloved tradition for so many mamas.
For years, I’ve been documenting motherhood in the studio. The clean, controlled environment allowed for smooth setups, beautiful light, and gorgeous backdrops. However, the idea of moving outdoors and embracing the natural beauty of a warm sunset seemed like the perfect next step. Plus, with Mother’s Day just around the corner, this would offer my clients a chance to not only celebrate themselves but also enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Bay Area.
The outdoor setup I envisioned would feature a dreamy white sheet backdrop, boho props, a vintage umbrella, and delicate chiffon draping all set against the stunning layers of mountains in the background. This would be the perfect balance between nature’s beauty and a curated, intentional setup that would make mamas feel like they were stepping into a little slice of paradise.
When the day of the mini sessions arrived, the weather could not have been more perfect. After weeks of worrying about the unpredictable weather—whether it would be gloomy, chilly, or windy—the universe smiled on us with a warm, golden evening. The sunset cast a soft glow over the entire scene, giving everything a dreamy, almost ethereal quality. The lush green grass beneath our feet was the perfect contrast to the soft ivory backdrop, and the chiffon fabric fluttered gently in the breeze.
I was beyond grateful to see the joy and excitement on the faces of the mamas. It was clear that they were enjoying not only the setting but also the opportunity to be in front of the camera. Most of the time, these women are behind the lens, capturing moments of their children, their families, or even professional work—but this time, they were the ones being celebrated. That was the beauty of these sessions—giving them the chance to step into the spotlight and feel the love and admiration they so often give to others.
Motherhood mini sessions have become a cherished tradition for many of my returning clients, and it’s easy to see why. These sessions are so beneficial for a variety of reasons, especially around Mother’s Day.
When it comes to choosing the perfect spot for my motherhood mini sessions, I wanted to ensure that the location was easily accessible for all the mamas and their little ones. I didn’t want anyone to feel like they had to trek for miles just to get to the session, so I took the time to scout out a spot that was just a one-minute walk from the parking lot. It was an accessible, peaceful location that allowed for stunning views without requiring a lengthy hike.
Each session was filled with authentic moments of connection. There were moments of quiet reflection as the mamas gazed out at the horizon, and moments of laughter as children played on the grass, climbed into their mama’s arms, or wrapped themselves up in the chiffon fabric. Each photograph was a reminder of how precious these years are—how fleeting the moments are with our children, and how important it is to capture them in their purest form.
One of my favorite parts of the session was watching the mamas interact with their little ones. There’s a beautiful vulnerability and strength in the way they connect, and I was fortunate enough to document these raw, emotional moments that only happen in the company of family. Every hug, every kiss, every smile was a testament to the love and dedication they have as mothers.
The shift from studio sessions to outdoor sunset mini sessions was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my business. Seeing the joy on the faces of my clients as they embraced the beauty of the outdoors was worth every moment of planning, scouting, and setting up.
Whether you’re a mama who’s been part of this tradition for years or you’re considering booking your first motherhood mini session, I encourage you to embrace this special experience. These sessions are more than just photos—they’re a celebration of you, the incredible mother you are, and the beautiful memories you create every day.
At the end of the day, these sessions are more than just about taking beautiful photos—they’re about creating lasting memories for my clients. I’m incredibly grateful to all the mamas who trusted me to document such an important part of their lives. It’s not just about the pictures—it’s about the experience, the laughter, and the love that fills the air during each and every session.
