Booking your first family photography session is an exciting milestone! Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, documenting your growing family, or simply wanting to freeze time before your little ones aren’t so little anymore, your family session should be a fun and enjoyable experience. But let’s be real—there’s always that tiny voice in the back of your head wondering how your kids will behave, if your outfit choices will look good on camera, and if you’ll manage to get through the session without breaking a sweat.
As a seasoned San Francisco family photographer, let me tell you—relax, I got this! My goal is to capture authentic, joy-filled moments with your family, and I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to make sure the experience is stress-free and enjoyable for everyone. Here’s what you can expect when working with me for your first family session, along with a few essential tips to ensure everything runs smoothly.
One of the biggest concerns I hear from parents is, “What if my kids don’t cooperate?” And to that, I say—don’t worry! My approach is to keep things lighthearted, engaging, and playful. Rather than stiff poses, I’ll guide you through natural movements and interactions that feel effortless. Expect lots of snuggles, tickle fights, and games to bring out those beautiful, candid smiles. Your job? Simply be present and enjoy your family. Leave the rest to me.
Snack breaks are a must! If you have little ones, you already know that their patience can be unpredictable. I always recommend bringing some of their favorite snacks (non-messy ones, ideally) to keep their energy up throughout the session. I’ll build in small breaks as needed, giving your child time to reset and recharge. Happy kids make for happy photos, so let’s keep them comfortable and content!
New places and new faces can be overwhelming for little ones, and that’s totally normal. One of the best ways to make them feel at ease is to bring along their favorite stuffed animal, doll, or toy. Not only will this provide comfort, but it can also make for adorable, heartfelt moments in the photos. And don’t worry—I have no problem making a stuffed bunny or action figure part of the session if it means your child feels at home!
I cannot tell you how many times a session has started, and within the first 10 minutes, a baby has a major blowout. It happens. It’s a rite of passage, honestly! That’s why I highly recommend packing extra diapers, wipes, and—most importantly—a backup outfit. It’s always better to be prepared so we can keep the session moving without a hitch.
For some children, meeting a new person with a big camera can feel a little intimidating. To make the transition smoother, I always suggest telling your child beforehand that I’m just a family friend who’s coming to hang out and take some fun pictures. When kids think of me as a familiar face rather than a “stranger with a camera,” they’re much more likely to relax and be themselves. And that’s when we get the best, most genuine smiles!
I know it’s easier said than done, but truly—don’t stress. Your kids might have a moment or two where they aren’t cooperating. They might decide to run in circles or refuse to smile. And you know what? That’s completely normal. I’m here to capture real family moments—the laughter, the chaos, the love—not perfection. Trust me to work my magic, and just focus on soaking up this time with your family.
When planning outfits, think coordinated, not identical. Choose complementary colors and textures that fit your personal style. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and neutral tones always photograph beautifully against San Francisco’s scenic backdrops. And most importantly, make sure everyone is comfortable—because if you’re comfortable, you’ll feel confident, and that will shine through in your photos.
If you’ve ever seen those dreamy, glowing family portraits, chances are they were taken during golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset. This is when the light is soft, flattering, and absolutely magical. If your schedule allows, I always recommend aiming for these time slots for the best results.
One of the perks of being a San Francisco family photographer is having access to breathtaking locations all around the Bay Area. Whether you love the idea of rolling golden hills, sandy beaches, towering redwoods, or an urban cityscape, we’ll find the perfect backdrop that fits your family’s personality. Let me know your vision, and I’ll suggest locations that bring it to life.
At the end of the day, family photos aren’t just about looking good for the camera. They’re about capturing your family’s unique bond, the love you share, and the fleeting moments you want to remember forever. So don’t stress about every little detail—just show up, be yourselves, and let me take care of the rest.
If you’re ready to create timeless memories with your family, I’d love to be the one to capture them for you. Whether it’s your first session or your tenth, I promise to make it a fun, relaxed, and joyful experience.
Family photography is more than just pictures—it’s about preserving the laughter, the love, and the genuine connections that make your family special. Years from now, when you look back at these photos, you won’t just see faces—you’ll remember the warmth of your child’s hugs, the way their little hand fit in yours, and the joy that filled that moment.
