If you’re planning a family session and you’re wondering what the full experience looks like—from the moment you inquire to the moment you receive your gallery—you’re in the right place. As a longtime San Jose family photographer, I’ve built a process that is warm, guided, intentional, and incredibly personal. My goal is for you to feel supported at every step so that the actual session feels effortless, relaxed, and genuinely fun for your family.
Most families tell me they book their session expecting “photos,” but what they end up experiencing is so much richer: a slow evening together, soft and golden light, playful moments between the kids, quiet snuggles, little details they didn’t even think to capture, and an experience that becomes part of their family memories—not just documentation of them.
This blog walks you through every stage, expanded in deep detail so you know exactly what happens and why each part matters.

Booking a session shouldn’t feel confusing or scattered. My whole system is designed to give you clarity, direction, and support from the very first step.
Below is an expanded, thorough breakdown of the full process before your session even begins.
The journey begins the moment you hit “submit” on your inquiry form. From there, my system automatically sends you a personalized link with everything you need to know about the specific session type you selected.
This initial message includes:
This ensures you feel informed and confident before moving any further.
Attached to that email is a custom questionnaire designed to help me get a deeper understanding of your vision. I never want to approach a session blindly. Instead, I want to learn who your kids are, what kind of family dynamic you have, whether you prefer candid or posed, whether you’re drawn to coastal views or golden fields, and how you hope these photos will feel years from now.
This questionnaire gives me that foundation. It also gives you a space to tell me anything you think I should know—from your toddler’s shyness to the fact that you prefer more gentle posing to the specific memory you want this session to preserve.
This early connection is what allows the entire rest of your experience to feel customized, instead of cookie-cutter.
Once your questionnaire is submitted, you automatically receive my location guide, which is one of the most helpful parts of the planning process.
This guide is not a simple list of parks in the Bay Area. It’s a curated collection of my favorite places to photograph as a San Jose family photographer—locations chosen because of:
Each location includes:
This guide eliminates the guesswork and helps you choose a location with confidence—whether you love cliffs overlooking the ocean, sun-drenched meadows, wooded trails, or the rolling hills the Bay Area is known for.
Many families tell me this guide alone gets them excited for their session because it helps them visualize what their photos could look like.
After your questionnaire and location selection, you receive a link to my calendar, where you can choose your preferred session date.
This step gives you full visibility into my availability and allows you to pick a date that works best for your family’s schedule. It also keeps things organized and ensures your chosen date is locked in immediately.
Once you select the date, your session is tentatively reserved until the retainer fee is paid.
Your 50% non-refundable retainer fee is what officially secures your session on my calendar. Because I only take a limited number of sessions each month—especially during busy seasons—this step guarantees your date is yours.
Once the retainer is processed, all the planning truly begins. Think of this moment as the official start of your personalized experience.

Once your retainer is paid, you’ll receive a custom prep guide built specifically for your session type. As an experienced San Jose family photographer, I’ve put a tremendous amount of work into creating a guide that’ll help my clients thoroughly!
This guide is extremely detailed and includes everything from what to bring, to what to expect, to how to prepare the kids.
Here’s what these guides typically include:
For family sessions:
For maternity sessions:
For studio sessions:
For travel or coastal sessions:
These prep guides exist to remove the stress and “unknowns” that families often feel before a session. By the time you finish reading yours, you’ll feel 100% ready and supported.
Outfits can make or break a gallery—truly. They set the tone, the color palette, the warmth, and the cohesiveness of your entire session. This is why I am highly hands-on with outfit selection.
During this phase, you’ll receive:
The key here is creating harmony. Whether it’s a flowy neutral dress in a field or layered earth tones at the beach, I guide you every step of the way.
Families often tell me this was the part they stressed about the most—until they realized how much support they receive.
For families who want to borrow from my curated client closet, we schedule an in-person appointment where you can try on pieces, feel the fabrics, and build a cohesive look for the whole family.
These appointments are deeply helpful because:
As a San Jose family photographer, I’ve experiences exactly what works… and doesn’t work for my photography style. My closet is curated with boutique-quality dresses, bump-friendly gowns, textured pieces, children’s neutrals, newborn options, and layers that photograph beautifully.
This takes a huge weight off your shoulders and ensures you step into your session feeling confident and comfortable.
One week before your session, the remaining balance is due. This timing ensures:
It also marks the last phase of prep before the magic begins.
Once your remaining payment is made, you receive the final confirmation email with:
This ensures your session day flows effortlessly and stress-free.

Here’s where everything you’ve prepared for becomes real—and what I lovingly think of as the “heart” of your entire experience.
When you arrive, we take a few minutes to settle in and walk to the starting point together. This short walk helps your kids warm up, helps everyone relax, and gives me time to read the mood and connect with you before the camera ever comes out.
No rush. No stress. Just softness.
Your session will either take place at sunrise (redwoods or studio), or during golden hour. Golden hour is non-negotiable for outdoor evening sessions, and for good reason:
Because I’m deeply particular about light as a San Jose family photographer, I choose every spot intentionally based on:
Lighting is everything in photography… and that is why your session is structured around it.
Every family is unique, but my workflow ensures your gallery feels full, connected, emotional, and diverse.
This workflow includes:
I guide you through each moment gently—nothing stiff, nothing awkward. You won’t feel posed; you’ll feel present.
Once the sun sets and we say goodbye, your experience continues behind the scenes.
You’ll receive your gallery within the exact timeframe outlined in your contract. This timeframe varies based on:
Regardless of the season, you will always know exactly when to expect your photos.
I never rush editing—but I also never leave you guessing.
When your gallery is ready, you’ll receive a private, password-protected link where you can:
I partner with professional labs that ensure:
This is where your photos become heirlooms—something your kids and grandkids can hold years from now.

Working with me as your San Jose family photographer means you receive:
Everything I do is intentional. Everything is designed to be stress-free. Everything is structured so your family can simply show up, be yourselves, and trust that I will take care of the rest.
When you look back at your photos years from now, I want you to remember the evening, not the logistics.
