Fall has officially arrived in the Bay Area, and if there’s one thing I love about this time of year, it’s having a little excuse to slow down and enjoy the simple things with family. Between pumpkin patches, Halloween festivities, cooler evenings, and the occasional excuse to grab something warm to drink, there are so many ways to make the most of the season without traveling too far from home.
If you’re anything like me, you might have every intention of planning a fun weekend outing, only to realize Friday has somehow arrived and you haven’t decided what to do yet. We’ve all been there!
Whether you’re looking for a festive pumpkin patch, an outdoor adventure, or something fun to do with the kids before Halloween, there are plenty of family-friendly activities throughout San Jose and the surrounding South Bay communities.
As a San Jose family photographer, I spend a lot of time exploring the Bay Area and appreciate how many beautiful places we have right in our own backyard. Some of my favorite family memories aren’t necessarily made during big vacations or elaborate outings. Sometimes, they’re the ordinary afternoons spent wandering somewhere new, laughing over something silly, or watching the kids get excited about the smallest things.
If you’re looking for a little inspiration for your family’s fall bucket list, here are seven places and activities to add to your calendar this season!
Location: Morgan Hill, California
Best for: Families who love seasonal activities, farm attractions, and all things pumpkin!
Is it really fall without a trip to a pumpkin patch? There’s something about seeing rows of pumpkins, enjoying a hayride, and letting the kids pick out their own pumpkins that makes the season feel a little more special.
Located just south of San Jose in Morgan Hill, Spina Farms Pumpkin Patch is a great option for families looking to spend an afternoon enjoying classic fall activities. The farm offers attractions including train rides, a cow train, a corn maze, pumpkin blasters, and a hayride. There are plenty of ways to keep little ones entertained, especially if your family enjoys a more activity-filled outing.
One thing I appreciate about places like this is that everyone can enjoy the experience in their own way. Maybe your toddler is completely fascinated by the train, while your older child is determined to conquer the corn maze. Or perhaps your family arrives with a plan to spend an hour and ends up staying much longer than expected.
And, of course, there are pumpkins! Whether you’re searching for the perfect one to carve or simply want to let the kids choose whichever pumpkin they fall in love with, it’s a fun way to bring a little piece of fall home.
A few things to know before visiting:
For the 2026 season, Spina Farms is scheduled to operate through November 2, weather permitting. Check its official calendar for current hours and seasonal updates before visiting.
My suggestion? Don’t try to fit every activity into your visit. Let the kids choose a couple of favorites, take your time, and enjoy the afternoon without feeling like you need to check every box on your list.
Sometimes, the best part of a family outing is simply watching your kids experience something new.

Location: San Jose, California
Best for: Younger children, animal lovers, and families looking for Halloween fun without the scares.
If you have little ones who love Halloween but aren’t quite ready for anything too spooky, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is worth adding to your list.
Located in San Jose, Happy Hollow combines a zoo experience with rides, play areas, and family-friendly attractions. It’s already a fun destination for a day out with kids, but the Halloween season brings an extra layer of excitement.
This year’s Green Halloween celebration takes place on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Families can enjoy activities such as a costume parade, festive crafts, games, animal encounters, and trick-or-treating. The event activities are included with general admission.
There’s also a costume discount running October 24–31, with guests who meet the park’s costume guidelines eligible for $3 off general admission. Be sure to check the official Green Halloween page for the current details and restrictions.
What I love about an outing like this is that it gives children the chance to enjoy the excitement of Halloween without making the entire day revolve around candy and costumes.
They can watch the animals, explore the park, participate in activities, and enjoy being part of the festivities. And if your child changes their mind about wearing their costume halfway through the day? That’s okay, too. A backup outfit never hurts!
A little planning tip: Check the event schedule before leaving home, especially if there is a particular activity your children are excited about. Arriving earlier can also give you more time to explore without feeling rushed.
Happy Hollow is a lovely option for families with younger children who want to make Halloween memories while keeping the day playful and manageable.
Location: San Jose, California
Best for: Families who enjoy festive events, shopping, food, and a little people-watching.
Sometimes, a fun family outing doesn’t have to involve a farm or a long drive. If you’re hoping to stay closer to the heart of San Jose, Santana Row offers seasonal activities alongside its shops, restaurants, and outdoor spaces.
One event to look forward to this year is the annual Trick-or-Treat The Row Halloween Family Festival on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon.
According to Santana Row’s event calendar, the free event is expected to include trick-or-treating, live music, pumpkin decorating, stilt-walkers, balloons, and other family-friendly entertainment.
The weekend before, Farmer Mike is also scheduled to appear at Santana Row on October 24 and 25 for pumpkin-carving demonstrations. If your children enjoy watching creative projects come to life, that could be another fun reason to visit.
One of the nice things about this area is that you can easily turn a short event into a more leisurely morning. Let the kids enjoy the festivities, take a walk, and stop for a meal or treat afterward.
And if you’re the parent who enjoys finding a good coffee while everyone else explores? There’s plenty to make the outing enjoyable for grown-ups, too.
My tip: Special events can get busy, so check parking arrangements and arrive with enough time to get settled before activities begin. For Trick-or-Treat The Row, remember that this year’s event is on a Tuesday morning rather than a weekend.
It’s a fun option for local families who want to enjoy the Halloween season without committing to an entire day away from home.
Location: 4835 Doyle Road, San Jose, California
Best for: Families who enjoy community events, pumpkin painting, carnival games, and Halloween activities.
If you’re looking for a fall activity closer to West San Jose and Campbell, the Moreland Education Foundation’s annual pumpkin patch is another local option to explore.
Unlike a traditional farm outing, this community pumpkin patch combines seasonal activities with opportunities to support local schools. Past and current event programming includes pumpkin painting, carnival games, movie screenings, and a family-friendly haunted trail.
It’s a nice reminder that some of the most memorable seasonal traditions happen right within our own neighborhoods.
For families with younger children, the earlier activities can be a good fit, especially if your little ones are curious about Halloween but aren’t ready for a particularly scary experience. Older kids may enjoy the haunted trail and other evening festivities.
The event also gives families an opportunity to support the community while enjoying an activity together.
For Halloween weekend, the Moreland pumpkin patch has events scheduled on October 31, 2026, including games, a scavenger hunt, and themed trail activities. Programming and times vary by date, so check the Moreland School District’s official event listing before visiting.
A helpful tip: Pay attention to the age recommendations for the different trail experiences. What’s exciting for one child might be a little too much for another, and there’s no reason to rush anyone into a spooky activity they’re not comfortable with.
I also love that community events can become traditions. Maybe your family visits every October, takes a photo together, or lets each child choose one new activity to try each year.
Those little rituals have a way of becoming some of the memories everyone looks forward to.

Location: East San Jose, California
Best for: Families looking for a community-centered outing with seasonal activities.
If your family enjoys local events where you can participate in activities, meet other community members, and enjoy a little seasonal fun, keep an eye on the fall calendar for Lake Cunningham Park.
One event happening this week is the Fall Family Festival on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Hosted by San Jose Clean Energy, the festival is scheduled to feature a pumpkin patch, trick-or-treating, children’s activities, and a community resource fair.
It’s a particularly convenient option for families in East San Jose and nearby communities who would rather attend a local event than drive farther out to a farm.
Community festivals can be wonderful because there’s often a little something for everyone. Younger children may enjoy the seasonal activities, while parents can explore community resources and enjoy being part of the neighborhood.
Before heading out, check the official event details for any updates about activities, parking, and event arrangements.
If you have multiple children with different interests, it can help to agree on one or two activities everyone wants to try before you arrive. That way, you can enjoy the event without feeling as though you need to see absolutely everything. And if your child decides the pumpkin activity is the best thing they’ve ever done, even though you spent the entire morning planning something else? Sometimes you just have to go with it. That’s part of the fun of family outings.
With so many things happening around San Jose, Morgan Hill, Campbell, and the surrounding South Bay, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season.
You could spend one weekend picking pumpkins, another exploring a garden, and another simply enjoying a walk somewhere close to home. You don’t have to attend every festival or plan a big adventure every week to make fall feel special.
And if the weather changes, plans get canceled, or everyone ends up wanting to stay home in comfortable clothes instead? That’s okay, too.
Some of the best family memories happen when we give ourselves permission to enjoy the moment instead of worrying about how perfectly the day unfolds.
I think that’s something worth remembering as a parent. Childhood moves quickly, and the ordinary moments we experience together are often just as meaningful as the big milestones.

As a San Jose family photographer, one of my favorite things about photographing families is getting to capture the little interactions that make each family unique.
The way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter that happens when someone makes a silly face, the spontaneous hugs, and the moments when everyone forgets about the camera for a little while are often the photographs that mean the most.
My approach to family photography is relaxed and lifestyle-focused. Rather than expecting everyone to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera throughout the session, I encourage families to interact naturally, enjoy time together, and let their personalities come through. Whether your children are full of energy, a little shy around new people, or somewhere in between, your session is designed to give your family room to be yourselves.
