Summer’s finally here, and if you’re a parent, you probably know the routine: school’s out, the days are longer, and the kids are already asking, “What are we doing today?” Keeping little ones entertained without breaking the bank can feel like a full-time job — but luckily, the Bay Area is packed with amazing, family-friendly things to do that are either free or super affordable.
From splash pads to hiking trails to free museum days, there’s so much to explore without breaking the bank. And if you’re thinking about updating your family photos while the kids are out of school, I’ve also put together 3 simple tips to prepare for your next session — trust me, a little planning goes a long way when it comes to keeping things stress-free and fun!
As a San Jose family photographer, I spend a lot of time scouting beautiful locations and chatting with families about their favorite spots to spend time together. So, I’ve rounded up five of the best kid-friendly summer activities that won’t drain your budget — perfect for making lasting memories while soaking up everything this season has to offer.

If there’s one place I recommend to families every single summer, it’s Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. This spot has everything kids (and parents!) love: wide-open grassy fields, playgrounds, shady picnic areas, and, of course, the sparkling lake.
It’s perfect for a relaxed day outdoors — pack a blanket, bring bubbles or a ball for the kids, and let them run free. And if you stick around until late afternoon, you’ll catch the most gorgeous golden light over the lake.
As a family photographer, I’ve had some of my favorite sessions here. There’s something about the mix of open fields and lake views that makes every photo feel dreamy and candid. Families love it because the kids can just be kids while I capture those natural, unscripted moments.
Pro tip: After the park, head next door to the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad and take a quick train ride. Tickets are under $4, and I promise — the excitement on your little one’s face is priceless.
When the summer heat kicks in, you’ll want a few indoor options on your list — and the San Jose Public Library is one of my favorites for families.
Throughout the summer, they host free events like storytimes, craft workshops, STEM activities, and the Summer Learning Program, where kids can earn prizes for reading. It’s the perfect mix of fun and learning — and it won’t cost you a thing.
I love this option because it works for kids of all ages, especially on those hotter days when outdoor plans feel overwhelming. Plus, it’s a hidden gem for capturing cozy, candid moments. Imagine your little one curled up with a book, completely lost in the story, or sitting cross-legged during storytime with that curious sparkle in their eyes.
I often tell parents that the sweetest memories aren’t always made at the “big” events — sometimes, it’s these small, everyday moments that mean the most.
If you’re looking for something that’ll keep the kids entertained for hours without breaking the bank, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose is a must.
Here, you’ll find everything from lemurs and meerkats to miniature horses and capybaras. In between animal exhibits, kids can enjoy vintage rides, shaded playgrounds, and even puppet shows. It’s designed perfectly for younger children, but older siblings will find plenty to do, too.
Happy Hollow also makes for a beautiful backdrop if you want to capture candid summer memories. Seeing families here, the excitement is so genuine — from the giggles on the carousel to the awe on their faces when they see an animal up close. These are the kinds of moments that make working as a photographer so special.
Budget tip: Bring your own snacks, refillable water bottles, and sunscreen to save money and stay comfortable.

One of the biggest perks of living in the Bay Area is having access to incredible hiking trails and nature escapes — many of which are completely free. Summer is the perfect time to explore them with the kids.
Some of my favorite family-friendly spots include:
Spending the day in nature is one of the best ways to slow down and connect as a family. When I’m photographing clients around these spots, I encourage them to relax, play, and just be together. Those are the moments that tell your family’s story — and they always make for the most heartfelt photos.
And the best part about living in the Bay Area? The fun doesn’t stop once summer ends. If you love seasonal outings, make sure to check out my guide to 4 of the best pumpkin patches near San Jose — they’re absolutely perfect for fall family photos and make the cutest backdrops for little ones!
If you’ve been searching for a photographer who loves capturing authentic, outdoorsy sessions, these nature escapes are some of my top go-to locations.
Few things feel more like summer than watching a movie under the stars or dancing at a community concert — and the Bay Area has plenty of free options for families to enjoy.
A few local favorites:
Grab a blanket, pack some snacks, and make an evening of it. These nights are made for memory-making — kids snuggled up on blankets, laughing with friends, and enjoying the magic of summer nights.
As a family photographer, I’ve captured some of my favorite candid moments during events like these. It’s not about posing or perfection — it’s about freezing those little in-between moments that you’ll want to look back on years from now.
Here’s the thing about summer: it goes fast. One minute, the school year’s ending, and the next, you’re shopping for back-to-school supplies again. That’s why I’m a big believer in slowing down and soaking in these little moments while you can.
Whether you’re splashing at Vasona, feeding ducks at Shoreline, or cuddling under a blanket during an outdoor movie, these are the memories your kids will carry with them. They don’t have to cost a fortune or be perfectly planned to be meaningful.
And if you’ve been thinking about documenting this season, summer is one of my favorite times to photograph families. There’s something about the golden light, messy hair, and barefoot adventures that makes these images feel so nostalgic and full of heart. As a family photographer, I’d love to help you capture your family’s story in a way that feels effortless and real.

Summer doesn’t have to be complicated — and it definitely doesn’t have to be expensive. From free library events and park picnics to zoo days and movie nights, the Bay Area has endless ways to create memories your kids will never forget.
