One of the most common questions I receive from families as a Carmel family photographer before booking their session is:
“Where should we take our photos?”
The truth is that choosing a location is about so much more than finding a beautiful backdrop. While gorgeous scenery certainly helps, the perfect location should complement your family, your personalities, your style, and the overall feeling you want your photos to capture.
As a San Jose family photographer, I spend a significant amount of time scouting locations throughout the Bay Area. Over the years, I’ve photographed families in rolling hills, coastal beaches, redwood forests, urban landscapes, open fields, gardens, and private estates. Every location tells a different story, and my goal is always to match your family with a setting that helps that story come to life.
If you’ve ever wondered how photographers choose locations for family sessions, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at my process.

Before recommending a single location, I take time to learn about your vision and family. Are your children adventurous and energetic? Do they love running, climbing, and exploring? Or would they feel more comfortable in an open field where they can play freely without distractions?
Some families envision playful, candid moments while others prefer a more polished and elegant look. Understanding your family’s dynamic helps me narrow down locations that will naturally encourage authentic interactions.
For example:
The location should feel like an extension of your family rather than simply a backdrop.
Beautiful light is the foundation of beautiful photography. When scouting locations, I’m constantly evaluating how light interacts with the landscape throughout the day. A location that looks stunning at noon may photograph completely differently during sunset.
As a photographer, I often prioritize lighting even over scenery because light creates:
Many of my favorite Bay Area locations are chosen specifically because they offer incredible golden-hour light. The warm glow just before sunset creates the dreamy, timeless look many families love. In contrast, some forest locations work best in the morning when sunlight filters gently through the trees. This is why I may recommend a specific location based on the time of year and the exact time of your session.
Believe it or not, wardrobe plays a major role in location selection. The colors, textures, and overall style of your clothing should work harmoniously with the environment. A location that perfectly complements one family’s wardrobe may not be ideal for another.
For example:
Soft blues, creams, tans, and neutral tones photograph beautifully against ocean scenery.
Earth tones such as rust, sage green, mustard, and beige blend seamlessly with natural landscapes.
Warm neutrals and rich textures help create depth while standing out against darker greenery.
Contemporary outfits often pair well with architecture, textured walls, and city environments.
By considering wardrobe and location together, we create a cohesive gallery that feels intentional and visually balanced.

Every stage of childhood comes with unique considerations. A location that works beautifully for a family with teenagers may not be practical for a family with a one-year-old.
When selecting a location, I think about:
For families with young children, convenience matters more than many people realize. If a toddler is already tired before we begin because of a long walk, it can impact the entire session experience. Choosing a location that allows children to remain comfortable and engaged often leads to happier photos and a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
One reason I continually scout locations is because landscapes change dramatically throughout the year.
A field that looks lush and green in spring may turn golden by summer. Coastal locations experience varying levels of fog depending on the season. Wildflowers bloom during specific windows and disappear quickly. Because of this, I often recommend locations based on the season rather than relying on a single “best” spot year-round.
Some examples include:
The goal is always to choose a location that is at its most beautiful during the time of your session.
One of my favorite things about carefully selected locations is the ability to create variety without requiring multiple locations.
When scouting a location, I look for:
This allows me to deliver a gallery that feels diverse and dynamic while keeping the experience simple for families. Many clients are surprised to learn that an entire gallery was created within a relatively small area because strategic positioning and thoughtful composition can dramatically change the look of each image.

While stunning scenery is wonderful, I never want families sacrificing comfort for a location.
Before recommending a spot, I consider:
My goal is to create an stress-free experience where families can focus on enjoying time together rather than worrying about logistics. When families feel relaxed, authentic moments happen naturally.
Clients occasionally ask why some photographers keep their favorite locations private.
The answer is simple: many of the locations I use have been discovered through years of scouting, exploring, and photographing throughout the Bay Area. Some locations remain beautiful specifically because they aren’t overcrowded. Limiting public exposure helps preserve the experience while ensuring clients continue to enjoy peaceful, scenic settings.
When you book with me, you’ll receive access to my curated location guide that includes a variety of carefully selected options based on your family’s preferences and goals.
One of the reasons I love being a family photographer here is the incredible diversity of landscapes available within a relatively short drive.
Within an hour or two, families can choose from:
This variety allows every family to have a unique experience and gallery that feels personal to them.
While family sessions often take place outdoors, the same intentional approach applies to newborn photography. As an Oakland newborn photographer or Bay Area newborn photographer may tell you, selecting the right environment is equally important when photographing a new baby.
For newborn sessions, I consider:
Whether photographing a growing family outdoors or welcoming a newborn at home, creating the right environment helps produce timeless images that families will cherish for generations.

At the end of the day, the perfect location isn’t necessarily the most dramatic or popular one. The perfect location is the one that helps tell your family’s story. It’s the place where your children can laugh freely, where parents can connect naturally, and where genuine moments unfold without feeling forced.
That’s why I don’t simply choose locations based on what’s trending. Instead, I take time to understand your family, your vision, and your goals so we can select a setting that feels authentic to who you are right now.
Years from now, when you look back at your photos, I want you to remember more than just a beautiful landscape. I want you to remember how your family felt in that moment. And that begins with choosing the right location.
